The “Average Number of Employees” is the average number of employees working at your company during that same time period. The “Number of Employees who Left” refers to the number of employees who left your company during a specific period, such as a quarter or a year. There are several ways to calculate attrition rate, but one standard method is to use this formula: Attrition Rate = (Number of Employees who Left / Average Number of Employees) x 100 ![]() ![]() Let’s take a look at calculating attrition rate for your business. If, during that same year, the company also hired 5 new employees to replace the ones that left, the turnover rate would also be 5%. In short, attrition rate is a measure of the long-term employee losses and turnover rate is a measure of the short-term employee losses.įor example, if a company has 100 employees, and 5 of those employees leave the company over a year, the attrition rate would be 5%. Employee turnover is a shorter-term measure, usually looking at a specific period, such as a quarter or a year. It is also expressed as a percentage of the total number of employees. On the other hand, employee turnover is the rate at which employees leave a company and are replaced by new hires. It’s a long-term measure and can be used to track overall trends within your business. It measures how many employees are leaving a company over a certain period, typically expressed as a percentage of the total number of employees. Employee AttritionĪs we saw earlier, employee attrition refers to the gradual loss of employees over time, usually through retirements, resignations, or deaths. Attrition vs TurnoverĮmployee attrition and employee turnover are related concepts, but they are different. If your attrition rate is higher than the industry average, you should investigate why to improve your retention rates. High attrition rates can indicate various problems, such as poor working conditions, low morale, lack of opportunities for advancement, or inadequate compensation. It is also essential for employers to understand and monitor the reasons behind their particular turnovers, because this will help them to identify where the issues lie and take the necessary steps to improve their employee retention rates in the long term. In some cases, a very low turnover rate can actually indicate stagnation, limited growth opportunities, or lack of a competitive compensation package.Įmployers need to track their specific turnover rate and compare it to industry averages and historical trends. In some industries or specific roles, a certain turnover level is expected as employees move on to new opportunities or retire. That being said, it’s important to note that some turnover is normal and even healthy for companies. Anything higher than that may indicate a problem or an opportunity for improvement in the company’s employment practices. Generally, most industries consider an attrition rate of around 5-10% low and healthy. However, a low attrition rate is generally considered a positive indicator for your company. Your ideal attrition rate will vary depending on your industry and specific company. ![]() You can use this metric to identify areas of concern and make changes to improve employee retention. During the summer, west-central Florida receives as much lightning as the world's true lightning leaders such as the Lake Victoria region of Africa and the central Amazon River Basin. Though the Tampa Bay area is sometimes referred to as the "Lightning Capital of the World", it is more accurately called the “Lightning Capital of North America” if measured by average number of days with thunderstorm activity per year. Waterspouts are relatively common in Tampa Bay and off the gulf coast during strong summer thunderstorms, occasionally moving onshore as a short-lived tornado. While Florida does rank #1 in the US in terms of tornadoes per square mile, the majority of the twisters are small, weak, and short-lived. At times, these storms can grow severe, bringing damaging winds, small hail, and torrential rain, and an occasional tornado. Afternoon storms are usually followed by a pleasantly clear and cooler evening, while morning storms usually bring very high humidity levels and a chance for more rain in the afternoon. Summer thunderstorms typically bring brief periods of heavy rain and gusty winds with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. If the prevailing winds are from the west or southwest, these storms can push ashore into the Tampa Bay area in the morning and move inland, reversing the more common pattern. Occasionally, storms form offshore overnight along the land-breeze front which is the dermal counterpart of the daytime sea-breeze front. Stronger storm cells often survive to move out over the Gulf of Mexico, where they can be seen from the beaches as spectacular nighttime lightning shows. Usually, the resulting storms drift slowly westward to the bay area, though they may rain themselves out before reaching Tampa if the easterly winds are light or the sea breeze from the Gulf of Mexico is too strong. The typical summer weather pattern is for heat-produced thermals, powered by either the Gulf or Atlantic sea breeze (and occasionally both simultaneously), to build puffy white cumulus clouds into threatening thunderheads over the interior of the Florida peninsula. Day-to-day weather is remarkably consistent, with wet season average high and low temperatures usually only about five degrees above or below the record highs and lows. Seasonal high temperatures average about 90s ☏ (around 32 ☌) and lows in the mid-70s ☏ (around 24 ☌), accompanied by high humidity and an almost daily chance of thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. Wet season Cumulus clouds building over the Tampa Convention Center on a summer afternoon In general, the local communities farthest from the coast have larger temperature ranges, both during a single day and throughout the seasons of the year. This proximity to large bodies of water both moderates temperatures and introduces large amounts of humidity into the atmosphere. Nearly two-thirds of the annual precipitation falls in the months of June through September. There are two basic seasons in the Tampa Bay area, a hot and wet season from May through October, and a mild and dry season from November through April. And while that might be true in the world outside of the arts, artists never really “take five” – they are always thinking, always moving, always playing. It asks you to stop working and relax for a bit. The phrase “take five” has always interested me. “Take Five”, “Blue Rondo à la Turk”, and “Strange Meadow Lark” – you couldn’t get more entertaining than that! Here was my opportunity to finally choreograph to those Dave Brubeck songs I loved so much. Right away I accepted and said I would have a think about the music. I knew PNB had a wonderful reputation for top-notch dancers, and I also knew Peter was doing a magnificent job running the company. He was commissioning choreographers to create an evening of spirited, witty pieces designed to entertain. Peter was putting together the program for PNB’s “Laugh Out Loud!” Festival. I received a call from the incomparable Peter Boal, former principal dancer with New York City Ballet who had been recently appointed as Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet. This music was a big part of my life growing up, and now, hardly a day goes by when I don’t listen to jazz. Other songs on that album I adored were “Blue Rondo à la Turk”, which has an unusual rhythm that consists of three measures of 2+2+2+3 and one measure of 3+3+3 then repeats, and “Strange Meadow Lark”, a beautiful ballad that starts with a piano solo and moves into a 4/4 swing. I remember Corky saying, “This is the first jazz album to sell a million copies!” That seemed like a lot to an eight-year-old girl. My older brother Corky, who had a great ear for jazz, had it in his collection and I gravitated to it even as a young child. I first heard the album Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet around the age of eight, and I listened to that record for years until I completely wore it out. ![]() I knew I was listening to something different – it was addictive. ![]() It was that time signature which intrigued me. Brubeck asked Paul Desmond to write a song in 5/4 time. Brubeck’s style was odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, and distinctive harmonies. “Take Five” was written by saxophonist Paul Desmond and recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. They stick with me and whenever I hear them, I imagine how I would translate that song into dance. There have been many songs in my lifetime that I dream I might someday have the chance to choreograph. |
