Backbone State Park was dedicated in 1920. ![]() Other designs use a gear reduction system before the hammer mechanism, most often a single-stage planetary gearset usually with a heavier hammer, delivering a more constant speed and higher "spin" torque. Most impact wrenches drive the hammer directly from the motor, giving it fast action when the fastener requires only low torque. A normal vane motor is almost always used, usually with four to seven vanes, and various lubrication systems, the most common of which uses oiled air, while others may include special oil passages routed to the parts that need it and a separate, sealed oil system for the hammer assembly. (This is similar to a conventional hammer, where the user applies a small, constant force to swing the hammer, which generates a very large impulse when the hammer strikes an object.) The hammer design requires a certain minimum torque before the hammer is allowed to spin separately from the anvil, causing the tool to stop hammering and instead smoothly drive the fastener if only low torque is needed, rapidly installing/removing the fastener.Ĭompressed air is the most common power source for impact wrenches, providing a low-cost design with the best power-to-weight ratio. With this design, the only reaction force applied to the body of the tool is the motor accelerating the hammer, and thus the operator feels very little torque, even though a very high peak torque is delivered to the socket. ![]() The hammer mechanism is designed such that after delivering the impact, the hammer is again allowed to spin freely, and does not stay locked. In operation, a rotating mass is accelerated by the motor, storing energy, then suddenly connected to the output shaft (the anvil), creating a high-torque impact. Impact wrenches are one of the most commonly used air tools. Impact wrenches are available in every standard socket wrench drive size, from small 1⁄ 4 in (6.4 mm) drive tools for small assembly and disassembly, up to 3 + 1⁄ 2 in (89 mm) and larger square drives for major construction. Pulse tools are not referred to as "impact wrenches" as the performance and technology are not the same. This gives a smoother impulse, a slightly lower torque to weight ratio and a possibility to design a shut off mechanism that shuts the tool down when achieving the correct torque. Pulse tools use oil as a medium to transfer the kinetic energy from the hammer into the anvil. For product assembly, a pulse tool is commonly used, as it features a reactionless tightening while reducing the noise levels the regular impacts suffer from. Impact wrenches are widely used in many industries, such as automotive repair, heavy equipment maintenance, product assembly, major construction projects, and any other instance where a high torque output is needed. ![]() “It’s very similar to the automobile industry or truck industry. And I would just like to address that a little bit,” Fritts says. “I know sometimes there is some concern with the smaller size of an engine changing displacement. ![]() Thanks to the new engine however, the new dozers can deliver fuel savings of up to 10 percent. The D1 remains at 80 hp, the D2 at 92 and the D3 at 104 hp. Though Cat has switched from its C4.4 engine to the new C3.6 engine, these new small dozers retain the horsepower ratings of the machines they replace. That provides quite a bit of commonality for servicing.īut emissions and fuel economy are two other major factors in the switch to the C3.6 for Cat’s smallest dozers. That Cat C3.6 engine is also notable because Cat is using it across a wide range of smaller equipment, including most of its Building Construction Products lineup of compact machines including backhoes, compact wheel loaders and more. The new Cat C3.6 engine provides quite a bit of space savings found through its more compact packaging and thanks to a bit of rearranging Cat engineers did with the engine components. Plus, Cat says that lower hood design was made possible by a new engine for this part of the dozer range. Cat says this change provides 30 percent more visibility both over the hood to the blade and to the operator’s peripheral views. Specifically, the machines feature a redesigned hood that slopes lower toward the ground. In addition to being adorned with the new Cat logo and model badges, now complemented with that new hexagon design, these dozers also feature styling changes. And while there’s a little concern there, in the long run, after we get through this adjustment period, I think it’s going to be a lot simpler for everyone to understand what size Cat dozer they need to do the work.”Īnd while we didn’t anything new to talk about with the D4, there’s plenty of new stuff to talk about with the new D1, D2 and D3.īeyond all the new model names, the next big change with these three new small dozers is their new look. So that’s how we wound up with this very simple model nomenclature, which basically from a D6 down, we’ve moved the numbers down a little bit. There’s a lot of heritage in the “D” nomenclature. We thought it was the best and that it preserved our brand equity. ![]() “One thing we really do at Caterpillar, we listen to our customers and our customers were telling us we needed to try to simplify our nomenclature somehow,” says Joel Fritts, Caterpillar product application specialist for small dozers. So, Cat changed the name to the D4 for obvious reasons. So, going back to the new D4 we mentioned earlier, since the new naming system for dozers only allows for one model per size class, that means the D6K2 would have fallen between the D3 and D5 in terms of size and capability. So if you grab one of these, you’ll be buying a bit of history. A little bit of triva for you, the D1 is an all new model name for a Cat dozer. That's because the internal electric connectors have to carry much less power so they are less robust, and the thinner, shorter cable saved some expense too. While his model does have the smart-charging software built into it and the cool glass cover probably added some extra expense, even with those improvements it probably costs Tesla less to manufacture than the previous high-powered wall connector. Tesla placed the same $500 price tag on the Gen 3 model as they did for Gen 2 wall connector.
![]() Now you have a suitable projection area, decent sound, and a projector connected to the internet, controlled either by a remote or your smartphone, with access to Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV, and all of the streaming services you normally use on the TV. Failing that (and if you have a huge or unlimited cellular data plan), you could tether the streaming device to your smartphone and use its data connection instead. This then needs to reach your Wi-Fi network, so you might need to invest in a network extender or mesh Wi-Fi network to make sure a good signal reaches your garden. This could be an Apple TV or Roku (although the former requires its own power outlet), or an Amazon Fire TV Stick or Google Chromecast, powered by the projector's own USB port. Your best bet, however, is to attach a media streamer to the HDMI port. This means you can plug a laptop into the HDMI port, or play content from a USB stick or hard drive. Most cheaper projectors don't have Wi-Fi, instead receiving video content through an HDMI or USB port, or sometimes an SD card slot. A couple of small speakers plugged into the projector's audio-out port (or headphone jack), and sat in front of the screen, will work just fine. Providing you don't mind dragging all of this equipment outside each time you want to watch something, we think simplest is best. This can mean a simple two-speaker system, like what might already be attached to your computer, or something more advanced and attached to the projector's HDMI, headphone, or optical audio port. These might be okay for very occasional use, but ideally you should hook up something better. Most projectors have a speaker or two inside, but they are often of poor quality. There are some exceptions, however, as detailed below. And remember, while a sub-$100 projector can work pretty well at night, a larger budget will mean a higher-quality projector with a brighter picture and higher resolution.Īs the vast majority of projectors are not battery powered (and can't be powered by a USB battery pack), you'll need to have an outdoor power outlet nearby, or invest in an extension cable to use an indoor outlet. If you can, set up your projector so the wall/fence/screen is in shadow as much as possible. Otherwise, wait until the evening and enjoy watching a movie as the sun sets. No matter how expensive, no projector can overpower the sun, so watching TV outdoors - especially on a sunny summer's day - is out of the question, unless you can create a way of casting a significant shadow on your projection screen. Remember, the latter will make for a larger image. Put it a few feet in front or behind you, if possible. Their internal fans tend to get quite loud and kick out a lot of heat, which isn't ideal on a balmy summer's night. Try to avoid positioning the projector directly behind or next to your seating area. But, no matter what your space and budget limitations, we hope this guide can help you inject new life into your yard. ![]() Of course, everyone's outdoor space is different and setting up an al fresco projector will be simpler and cheaper for some than it is for others. ![]() Building a smart home from the ground up: Here are the options to consider.7 outdoor tech devices to create a backyard paradise. ![]()
